Best Management Practices: Check Dam [Cd]
A small temporary barrier constructed across a swale, drainage ditch, or area of concentrated flow; check dams are used to filter sediment, reduce velocity, and stabilize grade.
Check dams are generally constructed of staked straw bales or stone. The dam should extend the entire width of the ditch or swale and should be lower in the middle to encourage flowing water to remain in the center of the channel.
Check dams are NOT to be constructed in live streams.
